Minnesota is redesigning their state flag. The Minnesota state flag is not very good, in the opinion of some legislators. I am inclined to agree.
“It’s literally a Native person being driven off their land,” said Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a Democrat, who is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and has refused, on principle, to use the state flag or seal in official correspondence and paperwork. “It’s horrific.”
I think Lt. Gov Flanagan is right. Also, this is perhaps another example of the weirdness of Minnesota politics. Only in Minnesota can Biden win by 5, Amy Klobuchar win by 20, have a "Democratic-Farmer-Labor" party, and decide to change their flag for decidedly "woke" reasons. Average state that didn't vote for Reagan, I guess1. They're also redesigning the seal. The new seal goes hard, not going to lie.
Redesigning a flag is inherently challenging. How can a flag represent 6 million people? The American flag does a good job, I think. 13 colonies, 50 states, red white and blue are solid colors. Minnesota's flag less so. But I am not a big fan of the finalists, which seem mid, too. New Mexico has a cool, simple flag. I think Minnesota's new flag will almost certainly be an improvement. Flags are a very difficult topic. Many states want to redesign their flags. Utah and Mississippi redesigned theirs recently. Hopefully Minnesota succeeds in a new flag which doesn't terrorize the state in needless controversy.
1 Minnesota is notably the only state to have not voted for Ronald Reagan.↩
